Science is a map that can lead us to a better world. Communication is the key to ensuring that we get there safely and all together.
My professional experiences meet at the intersection between technical hard science and science communication, outreach, and marketing. I am extremely fortunate in that my current role allows me to combine my passions for science and communication through science marketing, across a range of science applications.
Previously, I spent over 15 years as a scientist conducting multidisciplinary research across a wide range of research areas in health and environmental sciences. My work and interests continue to evolve and expand, and I have been fortunate to satisfy my intellectual curiosity through incredibly enriching work throughout my career.
My first research experience was in a cancer and toxicology research lab, which opened my eyes to the research process and techniques in health sciences. Subsequently, early on in my career, I became impassioned with a concern for climate change, and spent a number of years working on ecosystem impacts across a wide latitudinal gradient. Along with my continued microbial-biology applications, I gained expertise in chemistry and geology across different environments. This work all wraps up together in a field called “Biogeochemistry”. Yes, they do give PhD’s in that!
My experiences have been incredible and have brought me far beyond the lab bench to remote locations ranging from ocean research cruises with NASA, to the tropical rain forests of Puerto Rico, the beautiful and mountains of the Sierra Nevada, and then remote arctic tundra in northern most points of Alaska. I have even simulated extreme environments (in the lab) to generate building blocks of life as they may have originated.
Through my entire career, science communication and outreach has been a huge focus of mine, as I strongly feel that without communication, science impact is not realized. Through science marketing, I am applying my skill set towards effective science communication. I strive to use those same skills in my personal life towards advancing issues to promote positive change through science communication and community outreach.
