Apparently the first case where a “food producer” has sued the fossil fuel industry for climate change- It will be interesting to see how this unfolds, and could perhaps set a precedent for future, similar lawsuits. The evidence is indeed mounting. The link between fossil fuel combustion and climate change is supported by enough science that I believe would be possible to prove in court… but then also you have the pesky effects of climate change (besides sunny days on the beach), which is really what this lawsuit is about. We now have numerous scientific reports outlining the consequences of climate change and damage to ecosystems, economies, and societal health. Will this be enough to support such a lawsuit against big oil?
The reality is, oil companies make a lot of money mining and distributing oil, all while exploiting and damaging the environment. They load our metaphorical gun, and then we (as in all of society) pull the trigger. Where does the blame and responsibility lie here? Is it cut and dry? If a drug dealer sells lethal drugs to a user who then overdoses, who is at fault? This then leads to the whole gun debate. Does it matter if said commodity is legal or not?
What do you think?
